What Is Semax?
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. It was originally developed in Russia at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences as a derivative of ACTH(4–10), a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone. Unlike its parent compound, Semax lacks adrenocortical activity and has been studied primarily for its neurological and neuroprotective properties in preclinical and early clinical research contexts.
Semax in Neuroscience Research
The majority of published Semax research originates from Russian academic institutions, with a growing body of independent work. Key research areas include:
- BDNF expression: Studies have examined Semax’s ability to upregulate brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor trkB in various brain regions, making it a compound of interest in neuroplasticity research.
- Neuroprotection models: Animal studies have examined Semax in models of ischemia, stroke, and neurotoxicity, with observations on neuronal survival rates and oxidative stress markers.
- Dopaminergic and serotonergic systems: Research has explored Semax’s influence on monoamine neurotransmitter systems, particularly dopamine and serotonin receptor expression in limbic regions.
- Cognitive function models: Rodent studies have examined Semax in learning and memory paradigms, including spatial navigation tasks and conditioned avoidance models.
- Immune modulation: Some research has examined Semax in inflammatory models, with observations on cytokine expression patterns in central nervous system tissue.
Semax vs. Selank: Different Research Profiles
Semax and Selank are frequently discussed together as Russian-developed neuropeptides, but their research profiles differ substantially. Semax research has focused on BDNF upregulation, neuroprotection, and dopaminergic signaling. Selank research has emphasized anxiolytic-like effects in animal models and modulation of the enkephalin system. Researchers studying neurological signaling pathways often select between the two based on their specific mechanistic focus.
Laboratory Handling
Semax is typically supplied as a lyophilized powder for reconstitution. It is also available in nasal spray format in some research contexts. Store lyophilized stock at -20°C away from moisture and light. Reconstituted solutions should be stored at 2–8°C and used within 21–28 days. Semax is considered a relatively stable peptide under proper storage conditions.
